~ My Favorite Halloween Memory ~

I have a lot of wonderful Halloween memories growing up.  My dad used to take my brother and I trick-or-treating with our neighbor and his two kids when we lived in Cleveland.  I can vividly recall having to walk through snow to get candy and being bundled up with a winter coat!  One of my favorite memories of Halloween comes from when I was a junior in high school.  I was dating a senior guy, and he invited me to come with him and some friends to a haunted woods attraction.  I’m not super big on scary things, but I was willing to give it a try.  After Dracula drove us across a corn field on a tractor, we were dropped off at the start of a trail that wound through thick woods.  It was a full moon, so I was feeling pretty cocky that no dressed up monsters were going to sneak out and scare me because it was so bright out.  As we walked, laughing at the people ahead of us who were scared, my boyfriend put his arm around me.  After a little bit, I lifted my hand to link our fingers, when my hand brushed against my boyfriend’s arm.  That wasn’t over my shoulders!  I looked to the side and was face to face with a big werewolf.  I screeched in surprise and nearly knocked our whole group over when I hopped away like my feet were on fire.  All Mr. Werewolf said to me was “Hi there”, with a wave, and lumbered back into the woods.  They didn’t let me forget how funny it was that I’d walked for several minutes with a complete stranger’s arm over my shoulders and never even noticed!

  1. My favorite halloween memory was when i was young and was learning to play bobbing for apples lol i always got dunked by my grandad fun memories now that he’s gone and this year I’m introducing my kids to the time old tradition

    1. I’m glad you’re able to share that with your kiddos and relive those fond memories. 🙂

  2. My favorite Halloween memory was the first year my brother and I were too old to trick or treat. My mom threw us a party, invited all of our friends, and ordered pizza. She even parties with us. It was awesome!

  3. My favorite memory from Halloween took place around five years ago. I went trick or treating with my best guy friend and we met up with some other friends we knew from playing basketball together. I was a medieval girl, he was dressed in his dad’s Air Force uniform, another guy was covered in a black (spandex?) suit, the other girl was a genie/pirate, and the guy she was with was not in costume. Anyway, we hit all the good houses for over two hours (it was below freezing and I was wearing a thin costume that didn’t help). Once we were done trick or treating we played basketball in our costumes (mine was very hard to play in, especially the flowing sleeves). It was fun and on any other night would have looked absolutely odd. A ninja, medieval lady, Air Force guy, genie/pirate, teenage mutant ninja turtle, and regular teenager all playing basketball in late 20 degree temps.

    1. Aurora, I’m sure that was a funny thing to see but a great, fun thing to do on Halloween!

  4. My favorite would have to be the first year my kids were all old enough to go and they each were dressed as dragons I still smile when I look at the pic on the freezer door . Yes they are all grown now but I.still remember that day. They were growling at each other and trying to wag their tails lol

    1. Marlene, that’s so sweet! I loved being able to pick the costumes when my kiddos were smaller!

  5. Having fun at the ‘carnival’ sponsored by the Mother’s Club. Simple pleasures, to be sure: cake walks, ‘fishing’ for prizes, dunking for apples, etc. Mind you, it was in the one-room school house where I attended 1st-6th grades. Only one other person in my class. Anyone else attend one of those old rural schools?

    1. They’re the best kinds of memories, I think. Sweet and simple. Now that’s a small school! I had 70-some in my graduating class. 🙂

  6. My favorite memory of Halloween is when my hubby and I dressed up as orange versions of Raggedy Ann and Andy. I had an orange calico dress and pinafore so we were off and running 🙂 We won 1st place and were washing orange dye our of our hair for weeks, lol. Thanks for the giveaway!

    1. Lenna, that’s so funny! What a clever idea, and yes I know that hair dye spray is tough to get out! 🙂

  7. My favorite memory is getting homemade treats like popcorn balls from the neighbors. Not too long after that began the requirement to take our candy to the hospital to go through the X-ray. Thankfully we have left that in the past.

    1. Deanna, I’m thankful for those kinds of good memories, too! I loved those, and we even made them as a family to hand out sometimes. 🙂

  8. My favorite Halloween memory would have to be when my big brother ditched his friends who were trick or treating to take his baby sister me through the neighborhood because I was afraid to go out because some older kids were taking candy from us little kids my big brother took me and a few friends around to make sure we were okay. This will stick with me forever because my brother friends teased him forever but I was a good little sister and shared my candy since he didn’t get any well he was watching out for all of little girls.

    1. What a great big brother you’ve got, Shawnnita! I have lots of fond memories of walking with my brother for trick-or-treat, too. 🙂

  9. My favorite Halloween memory is making a costume with my dad. My dad was a cop, and we were never sure if he’d be home for a holiday or not. Well, he was going to be home for trick or treat one year, so he helped me make my costume. He made me a washing machine lol. I actually won a prize in our village costume contest. I had to have been 7 or 8 at the most. 🙂

    1. That is such a sweet memory, Cindy! Thank you for sharing. And a great, inventive father you had!! 🙂

  10. Thank you for reminding me to post here too my favorite Halloween memories are loading up the vista cruiser and going into town to trick r treat with friends. We now do that for our kids except its an F150 and I help eat their hard earned candy.

  11. Going to the old filling station to see my friends and get goodies on my road. It’s gone now and the owner died several years ago. Fond memories

  12. I don’t have a favorite memory But I do Have a worst memory if that will count. When I was 8 and again when I was 14 I ended up having strep throat for both those Halloweens and it didn’t make for a fun time.

    1. Aw! One of my kids was ill last year and only got to go to one house before they just felt too sick to keep going. I was sad for them, since it’s a fun thing to do!

  13. My last time to go trick or treating I got to wear an actual ball gown that my mom hemmed and tucked to make it fit…I went as Cinderella!

  14. My favorite halloween memory is going to Salem, MA to experience the excitement and hauntings. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The costumes were amazing and the attractions were interesting and exciting. It is a day I will never forget. I can’t wait to go back for another halloween adventure there!

  15. I’m daughter was 3 at the time and my husband was talking her up to a house. And there was a scarecrow on the porch and he was telling her that it wasn’t real. He went to touch it to show her it wasn’t real. Well it was and moved scared him so bad he left my daughter on the porch by herself

  16. My favorite Halloween memory – or one of them at least – is dressing up as Casey Jones (the RR conductor) and going through my candy with my dad while holding a stuffed animal dressed as I was.

  17. I Am from Denmark and we don’t really have Halloween here sadly. The closest we have is “Fastalavn” usually in february where kids dress up and beat on a hanging barrel (with candy or something else inside) with a club and the one who beat the bottom out is the “catking”. The kids also go around knocking on doors and singing – but usually for money and not candy. There isn’t a lot of decorations involved as in halloween and adults doesn’t dress up. My favorite memory isn’t a specific one but of all the costumes my mother made for me herself (most buy premade costumes)

  18. My favorite is riding horses as a posse to trick or treat because the houses were too spread apart! The neighbors loved it also!

  19. favorite memory was in 1991 … went into labor and gave birth to oldest daughter on halloween

  20. My favorite memory was 2 years ago when my son, who is obsessed with sheep, told me he wanted me to make him a sheep for Halloween. 1 white sweatshirt, 1 white sweatpants, hot glue, and over 10 bags of cotton balls later, he was the sheep of his dreams.

  21. My favorite memory is my daughters first halloween she was able to walk around for we had 2 feet of snow. It didn’t slow us down.

  22. My great uncle used to visit us at Halloween. I love all those years (too few) that he was able to take my sisters & I trick-or-treating.

  23. When my husband and I were dating, we went to an adult Halloween party. There was bobbing for apples, pin the tail on the werewolf, and other games, plus wonderful food and lots of plenty of adult beverages. It was my first and only adult Halloween party so very memorable!

  24. When I was in 1st grade I had broken my arm. My mom took me to a school halloween function and there was a game where you had to stand on your hands upside down by a wall and drink a cup to win a prize. I really wanted to do it but my arm was in a full cast so my mom held my feet up while I stood on one arm. Both my parents worked when I was younger so I didn’t get a lot of quality time. But that made my day, that my mom helped me accomplish something so small just so I could win a prize.

  25. A few years ago I started carving detailed pictures into pumpkins! That was really fun and it is something that I really like to do!

    1. Neat! I love to watch Halloween Wars on the food network and see people make amazing things from pumpkin!

  26. My favorite Halloween memory was when I was about 10 or 11, we didn’t have money to buy costume. So my mom put her rollers in my hair, I wore her bathrobe and slippers, and carried a rolling pin. She said I was an outraged housewife! Lol it was fun explaining what my costume was and most of the women laughed. Thank you and Happy Halloween!

  27. well here in PT we dont realy have Halloween like in America, just a very little amount of kid’s go trick or treat and all that!!!!
so i normally just go to a Zombie walk and shoot some Nerf’s at some zombies, and my favorite memory was from the first time i did it and it was amazing!!!

  28. My favorite memory was when I was 8 our neighbors asked us to come over for a Halloween party. There were 14 of us so that was the whole party. We bobbed for apples. It was so much fun .I had never done that so i thought it was awesome.

    1. Sounds like you had fun! I only ever tried bobbing for apples once, and I accidentally inhaled and snorted a bunch of water right up my nose!

  29. My favorite memory would have to be as a child my uncle scared me so bad that I could not even react. He some how got the keys from the kitchen counter while I was talking to my aunt at her house and got into my car. I unlocked my car got into and he put his hands around my neck and pretended to strangle me! I was so scared but I can only laugh at the loud, high pitched scream that left my mouth. I did not know a human could scream that high pitched until it happened. Even though it was terrifying I still think of it as one of my bet Halloween memories.

  30. My favorite memory is after trick or treating, my family would all sit down in front of the tv, going through our candy, and watching the midnight hour on ABC! They used to play it on Halloween for a few years in the 80’s or early 90’s. I wanted my kids to experience the joy of coming home and watching that movie but I couldn’t find it anywhere on DVD for under $150… finally I was able to find a vhs of it for a lot cheaper! My kids loved that movie too!

  31. I think my favorite Halloween memory will be this year’s Halloween. I am 20 weeks pregnant with our first child and my husband and I couldn’t be more excited. We are finding out out the gender this weekend and plan to celebrate the news with family and friends. Definitely a Halloween to remember!

  32. My favorite Halloween was the year my brother had a huge fit because he wanted it to be Christmas instead of Halloween. So I ended up dressing him up in all green and the dug out all the Christmas stuff and decorated him up as a Christmas tree. He loved it and was finally happy to be going trick or treating.

  33. My favorite Halloween memories are of trick or treating as a kid. The chilly evenings, the spooky decorations and fun costumes and the bags of candy. Thanks for participating in the hop!

    1. Those are great memories to have and share, I enjoy doing that with my kiddos now, and know my parents always had fun too.

  34. Not a fan of Halloween, but watching my sons when they were old enough to carve their own pumpkins was the most fun. We’d save the seeds, wash them, and roast them in the oven.

  35. My favorite Halloween memory was the year my mom made me a Strawberry Shortcake outfit. I was 4, and my dad pulled me in my wagon from house to house, and carried me to each door. I love them so much. <3 Thank you for the chance. =D

    1. Aw, Lynn, that’s so sweet. I was Strawberry Shortcake one year, but I had one of those plastic masks and smocks. She was always my favorite of the characters.

  36. Hehehe I see you got your love of shifters early! Too cute. Did you ever find out who your werewolf was?

I live in a cold climate as well (Regina SK Canada) and most of my memories involve being grumpy that my costume was hiding under my warm coat! I finally figured it out my last year taking my bro & sis out – I dressed as an “alien” with an old shiny silver dress shirt of my dad’s worn backwards over my winter coat and some funky polyester pants. I used a marker to write weird symbols on the shirt and had a headband with antenna on it and bright neon green gloves that matched the pants. I was dressed warm enough not to freeze & had a costume people could see. Score!

I also remember my Dad taking his favorites out of each of our bags – he loved his O’Henry & Crispy Crunch so if you wanted to eat one of those you had to do it on the street before you got home. LOL Thanks for making me smile (I miss my Dad).

    1. LOL, no I didn’t ever figure out who the sneaky wolf was, but you’re right – I’ve always enjoyed the supernatural. I was just talking to a friend the other day about trick or treating in the cold weather. My husband loves Reese’s Cups, so he always has to “inspect” them from the kids’ bags, and they never get returned, lol. I’m so glad I could help brighten your day, Heather.

  37. My favorite Halloween memory is dressing up as Zoro-I even had a sword. my brothers made fun of me because Zoro was a boy-but I loved that costume

  38. My favorite Halloween memory was after going trick or treating with my mom and sister we would go home eat snacks and watch scary movies late into the night

    1. That’s a fun tradition! My kids and I like to watch The Simpsons Halloween specials after Trick or Treat.

  39. My grandfather loved to take me trick or treating. He would pick different neighborhoods and I always got tired long before he was ready to stop.

  40. My favorite Halloween memory is taking my then 6-year-old 1st grade son to the Mother/Son, Father/Daughter Halloween dance at his school. We worked on his dancing skills (fast and slow) before hand. We danced on our own and in a group with his friends, had treats, laughed and had fun. At one point he won a contest for dancing, and when they asked him his name, what grade he was in, and who his teach was, he was complimented on how well spoken he was (always something to make a mom proud). He made a big impression on some of the 8th grade boys who were working the refreshments table when we walked over there during a sing-a-long to Frozen’s “Let it Snow” when he told them that it was time to eat because that was a girl’s song. The kept singling him out for various games and activities. All Michael’s friends were very impressed that the older kids liked him so much. It was an awesome night and we both still talk about how fun it was.

  41. My favorite Halloween moment was when my husband and I got married. We went to Knots Scary Farm for our wedding night, we were married on Halloween. We were walking in the park while the employees were dressed in no face and in black outfits with shakers. We were standing in line for a ride when an employee ghoul came in front of us and tried to scare us. I backed away and without looking grabbed my husbands hand so he could protect me and when I turned to tell him that, IT wasn’t my husband it was a ghoul! I screamed and took out two people standing by me. All the while my husband of 6 hours was laughing his butt off! Needless to say he slept on the couch for a while that night! Lol

  42. My favorite Halloween memory has been since I have had my son. We took him to his first haunted house this year and even though he was scared, he was very brave. He was so excited afterwards that he wanted to go again. I love making memories with him on my favorite holiday.

  43. My favorite Halloween memory was the year my daughter dressed as Cinderella and her cousin was dressed as the Little Mermaid and they went trick or treating together. They were so adorable!

  44. My favorite halloween memory is was getting money from some of the houses that we had went trick or treating to. To me it was a really special treat cause most houses just gave out candy.

  45. When i was younger my father used to take me trick or treating. I always got extra treats because everyone knew him lol

  46. Mom would take my brother and me out trick or treating and go visit our neighbors while dad would stay home and answer the door .

    1. I like handing out candy to get to see all the cute costumes, but it’s fun to go out with the kiddos too!

  47. My favorite Halloween memory is of what my brother, sister, and I would do once we got home from trick-or-treating. We would sit on the living room floor, dump out our candy, and them trade back and forth. It was better than the candy itself. So fun.

  48. Mine would be with my granddaughter. Taking her to the pumpkin patch to get her pumpkin each year.

  49. a couple years ago, my son was really struggling with halloween and we were going to a part and he came down the stairs wearing EVERYTHING FRO< THE DRESSUP BIN, shouting "i am super bat spider scary monster ghost man"!!!!

    1. Wonderful! I think everyone should make a trip to one at least once. They’re always so fun for the kids.

  50. My mom at my niece’/ Halloween birthday party the year before she passed away. She felt like poop from the cancer, but she put on a feather boa and a tiara and went around bopping the grandkids with her magic wand. One of my favorite Halloween memories and fave memories of her!

  51. The first Halloween after my daughter was born. I had all my kids by then, I finally could pick out cute girl costumes and we did our first family costumes

  52. My favorite had to be the first year I took both kids trick or treating for the first time. My son who was four would go up to the door and every time he would go and say treat but not trick when I asked him why he wouldn’t say trick and he told me in all seriousness that that way he would always get a treat and no one could trick him.

  53. Every year, I make a new favorite Halloween memory as I take my children Trick or Treating. Sadly, we’ve had one thing after another happen this year, and haven’t even had time to get costumes. I have no idea what we’re going to do today for the trick or treating thing. Of course, they’re both 12 (they’re 11 months apart), so they’re really getting too old for trick or treating, but I was hoping for this one last year…perhaps we’ll have a blast this afternoon throwing something together. It’s easy for my daughter, we have costumes, but not for my son. *sigh*

  54. When my daughter was 6 years old my mother made her a beautiful mermaid costume that she wore to school and trick or treating and she was absolutely adorable. That was one of the last good holidays I spent with my mother and helping her make that costume.

    1. Yes! The winner was announced in a blog post last week and contacted already. Thanks for being part of the fun!
